One teacher’s account of supply teaching and why it is a joy

Having been teachers ourselves, First Class Education understands the ups and downs that can accompany many teaching roles across all stages of education, from Primary through to Secondary and SEN. When we hear of stories that remind us of why supply teaching is such a joy for some people, we want to share it with all of our readers.

Temporary teaching appointments are a positive ‘life-style’ choice for thousands of highly-skilled and experienced teachers.  They are not just “filling in” between permanent jobs.  These are high quality teachers capable of high quality education delivery that minimises the impact when a regular staff member is absent, whether it’s for one day or a whole term.

A recent NAS-UWT survey of over 800 teachers asked about why they carried out temporary teaching work and some interesting themed emerged:

  • Reduced workload in compared with permanent staff
  • Greater flexibility over what they did
  • Better employer relationships
  • Better morale
  • Freedom from high-stakes accountability
  • Highly valued for their professionalism and “can-do” attitude

This article provides first hand testimony of all of this!
